We chose the location of Lukimbi Safari Lodge very carefully for it was critical that the extraordinary magic of the reserve was fully appreciated whether out in the bush on safari or from the sanctuary of the lodge itself. When we came upon a clearing under a cluster of ancient trees in front of a natural fed spring, with the most beautiful view along the bank of the Lwakahle River, we knew we had found home.

It took 2 years for us to build our lodge, which we constructed ourselves out of natural materials to blend subtly into the surrounding environment, but to also leave a very light footprint on the earth. In among the marula trees, sweetthorn acacias, knobthorns and bushwillows lining the water,it made sense to build a lodges on stilts with many carved concrete panels. These panels are a feature throughout the lodge. Every room and living space was designed around the view, while latticed ceilings filter the sun’s dappled light, casting ambient shifting shadows as the sun moves across the sky. This Lodge is one with the environment, and you can feel it.

Lukimbi has a character of its own – warm, inviting, charmingly imperfect and a little quirky too. Bright and richly textured natural fabrics, bold furniture chosen for comfort and artisanal crafted artworks encourage proper relaxation where you’re invited to make yourself completely at home – be that in the lounge, the bar, the dining room or one of the relaxation alcoves on the upper or lower deck, or in the library. The pool area is a place of serenity, right on the bank of the Lwakahle River. It includes multi-leveled relaxation decks, with a pool overlooking the river. A children’s paddle pool is close by.

We welcomed our first guests in October 2002.

Lukimbi’s 16 Suites (14 Classic Suites and 2 Premier Suites) all flank the Lwakahle River and have their own private views of the bush. We planned them carefully to allow for privacy, whether you are travelling as a family, a group of friends, a couple, or on your own.

Suites are connected to the main lodge via raised wooden walkways, which lend itself to the lodge’s atmosphere of being elevated among the trees. Guests who have difficulty walking should request the units closer to the main facilities, as the more remote units are a bit of a distance away. Both Classic and Premier Suites may be converted to accommodate families.

Lukimbi has one suite which has been adapted to cater for disabled guests who are wheelchair bound.

The Kruger National Park is a protected sanctuary of almost 2 million hectares and is home to 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 116 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammal species.

This area of the Kruger National Park is highly protected, and as a result visitors are treated to frequent sightings of the endangered rhino, both white and black. White rhino now number more than 2 600, representing the largest population in Africa.

Although this woodland does not sustain the concentrations of game found on ‘sweet grasses’ sustained in clay soils, you will find giraffe, zebra, impala, kudu, buffalo, white rhino and elephant . As wildebeest and zebra – preferred prey species of lion – are found in low numbers in this southern region, these apex predators are less common here. This relative scarcity of lions means that cheetah and wild dog found in reasonable numbers.

A recent survey found that about half of Kruger’s 180 cheetah occur in this area.

Another common predator found in bushwillow woodland is the leopard, although these secretive camouflaged cats are more difficult to find. The numerous rocky outcrops, dense foliage and an ample supply of medium-sized mammals make the area perfect for their hunting technique of stalking and ambushing prey. As leopards are solitary and often store their prey in tree canopies out of the reach of other predators, they are able to survive in a wide variety of habitats.

The woodlands of this area are home to several bird species that are not as abundant in other areas of the reserve. These include species such as the black sunbird, yellow fronted tinker barbet and Ayres’ cisticola. Other notable bird records for the area include the pennant winged nightjar, red collared widow and bush shrike. Among the riverine bird species found here – also uncommon in other areas of the reserve – are the purple crested turaco, green Pigeon, African fish eagle, African goshawk, white crowned plover, black duck, half collared kingfisher, white fronted bee-eater, trumpeter hornbill, natal robin and bearded robin. Fruit-bearing trees such as wild figs and jackal-berries are common here and attract fruit-eating birds.
